Why Do So Many Dog Longevity Brands Make the Same NAD+ Claims?

The reason every NAD+ chew sounds identical isn't coincidence — it's a regulatory ceiling every brand is writing underneath.

Open five different NAD+ supplement pages for dogs in a row and you’ll start to feel like you’re reading the same document with the fonts swapped. “Supports cellular energy.” “Promotes healthy aging.” “Cellular vitality.” I get asked about this constantly, usually by an owner who has already read three label pages before their appointment and wants to know which brand is telling the truth.

Do this first: don’t try to find the brand with the boldest claim. Find the brand with the most specific one — a named ingredient, a stated dose, a form (chew, capsule, powder) — because specificity is what regulation actually rewards, and vagueness is what it tolerates.

Dog supplements, like human ones, are allowed to make structure/function claims — statements about supporting a normal body process — without pre-market approval, but they are barred from disease claims. According to FDA guidance, a structure/function claim describes how an ingredient maintains normal, healthy function; it cannot say a product treats, cures, or prevents a disease. That line is why you’ll never see a label that says “reverses aging” but will see a dozen that say “supports healthy aging” or “supports cellular function.” It’s not that every formulator independently landed on the same phrase out of creative laziness. It’s that the phrase is the legally defensible one, and the alternative — a disease claim — triggers a different, much heavier regulatory bar that almost no pet supplement is positioned to clear.

Pet supplements add a second layer on top of the FDA framework: voluntary industry self-regulation through the National Animal Supplement Council, which requires member companies to keep a substantiation file behind every claim on the label — ingredient identity, dose, species, and the evidence tied to that specific claimed use. A brand that wants NASC standing has to be able to produce that file on request. That’s a real constraint, and it’s one more reason the language converges: claims that can be substantiated tend to be structure/function claims about a named ingredient at a stated dose, not sweeping promises about lifespan.

I read labels the way I read a case history — dose first, then source, then what’s actually being claimed — and once you start doing that, the sameness stops feeling suspicious and starts feeling like the floor everyone is required to build on.

What the ingredients are actually doing, and where the data stops

The three ingredients that show up across nearly every NAD+ formula are nicotinamide riboside (an NAD+ precursor), quercetin, and resveratrol, usually stacked together in a chew. Nicotinamide riboside is generally positioned as a compound that supports normal cellular function, and one formula on the market states this at 120 mg per two-chew serving. Quercetin is a flavonoid studied for antioxidant, immune, and cellular support properties, with one labeled formulation at 100 mg per serving; resveratrol is typically paired with it as a second antioxidant, in one case at 40 mg per serving alongside 100 mg of quercetin.

Where I get more careful is translating “studied for” into “proven to.” A lot of the mechanistic backing for these ingredients comes from cell and invertebrate models, not from dogs. In one in vitro study, quercetin formulations “did not affect the feeding behavior of the worms” tested at the concentrations used — a finding about tolerability in a lab model, not a demonstrated benefit in a living animal (DOI.3390/ph19040525). Resveratrol research shows the same pattern of nuance rather than clean wins: in one embryonic exposure model, resveratrol at 50 μg/ml “accelerated pupation and adult emergence but shortened adult lifespan” — a reminder that antioxidant compounds don’t behave uniformly across doses or life stages, even in simple organisms (DOI.1016/j.phymed.2026.158531). Neither of those findings is a dog study, and neither should be stretched into one. I cite them because they’re the kind of upstream evidence a label is often built on, and reading the actual paper — not just the marketing summary of it — is the whole job.

One owner survey I’ve reviewed, covering 193 dogs on a nicotinamide riboside chew in March 2025, reported that 97.8% of owners saw a visible improvement after the first jar, with 94% noting cognitive changes and 98% reporting energy changes. That’s a useful signal about owner-perceived response, and it’s worth knowing about, but an owner survey is not a controlled trial, and I treat it accordingly — as a data point about experience, not proof of a physiological effect.

A goldendoodle I worked with last year, twelve years old and about 58 pounds, is the case that comes to mind here. His owner had started him on an NAD+ chew after reading three different brand pages that all used nearly the same phrasing, and she came in asking which one was “real.” We went through the labels together — dose per chew, the ingredient list, whether the claims were structure/function or something stronger. What we found was that two of the three brands disclosed exact milligram doses per serving and one didn’t disclose dose at all, just an ingredient list. That’s the tell I look for now before I look at anything else on the page.

How to actually compare two labels that say the same thing

Stop reading the marketing copy first. Read the supplement facts panel first, because that’s where brands differentiate even when their front-of-package language doesn’t. Check for a stated milligram dose per serving for each active ingredient — not a proprietary blend total, an actual per-ingredient number. Check whether the claim is tied to a specific ingredient (“nicotinamide riboside supports normal cellular function”) rather than a vague blend statement (“our formula supports vitality”). Check for a batch or lot-specific certificate of analysis, or at least a stated testing standard, since that’s the piece that distinguishes a NASC-participating brand from one that isn’t.

If two labels use identical structure/function language but only one discloses dose per active ingredient, that’s not a stylistic difference — it’s a substantiation difference, and it’s the one that should move your decision. For dogs already dealing with chronic kidney or liver disease, or any dog on multiple medications, loop your regular veterinarian in before adding any longevity supplement; dose relative to body weight and interaction risk are exam-room questions, not label questions.
